Hello there.

I’m so happy to finally share our FINISHED master bedroom! At least it is 95% finished. We both know a collected room is never really done.

You may remember I shared my plans to complete this room last summer, and I finally got time to photograph all the lovely changes. The room’s wall color has stayed the same SW Tradewind Blue, while the bedding, nightstands, vanity, and lamps got upgraded.

Our master bedroom decor is a mix of collected treasures, secondhand finds, and custom pieces. It’s a serene escape with layered colors, playful patterns, and elegant antiques. After the updates it truly feels like a peaceful respite at the end of the day.

First let’s take a look back at where we started in 2016…

Brown walls…brown carpet…blah…boring…blah

By 2020 I had made some significant changes: painting the walls, scoring a beautiful headboard, and hanging some striped curtains, but still a long way from my goal.

2022 was the year we ousted the old brown carpet! This soft beige in Champagne Toast from Shaw in the pattern Faint Intent made the room so much brighter! Vintage chintz curtains from an estate sale really started to take the room in the direction I wanted.

And now…

Drum roll please…

Our serene escape in all her bright glory!

This room is a study in color contrast with the distinct palette of dark green and light blue. From my very first vision for this space I knew I wanted to decorate our master bedroom in these colors. I love the organic feel of sky and forest, and I think that’s why this high contrast scheme creates such a serene room — it’s a pairing we commonly find in nature!

Blue and green isn’t the only contrast though. I also brought in a lot of white/ivory and it plays against the dark wood furniture beautifully. Contrasts in a room keep things interesting by giving your eye clear cues to follow and building tension between the opposites. You always want to incorporate contrast in a room, but you want it to still feel balanced and appropriate for the ambience of the room.

Let’s take a closer look at the new bedding…

I had a difficult time deciding on patterns to complement the chintz curtains and the striped headboard fabric. Then I met Scrolling Fern Silhouette from Soane and fell in LOVE! It is a lovely organic pattern that just flows with the florals and stripes. I would love to do everything in this pattern, but she is an expensive devotion, so I limited myself to two small pillows in the chestnut colorway.

To bring in a little more color and fun I had euro shams made in Lee Jofa’s Taplow marbled fabric in the Juniper/Petal colorway. To add a little interest to the shams I added a simple cream colored flanged trim.

The duvet is a beautiful, soft organic cotton in a waffled texture that just makes my bed feel so luxurious and cozy! The goose down comforter insert doesn’t hurt either! I chose the “all seasons” weight and it has been so cozy and warm through the winter. A green velvet quilt completes the look.

What about the nightstand situation?

They are white…they are new…they are O.K.

I have yet to find the perfect antique/vintage pair of nightstands, so I’ve settled for a set that is “good enough”.  While I always try to wait for the right piece to come along and avidly hunt, sometimes you just need a functional piece that looks fine.

I didn’t spend a lot of money, and I feel like I can use them in a guest room or James’ room when I do find the perfect antique pair for our master bedroom.

These gorgeous antique green Chinese vase lamps were a total surprise — thanks to the serendipity of the hunt. I had no intention of removing the pale green double gourd lamps, but when these showed up at an estate sale I just knew it was meant to be. The rich emerald color perfectly complements the dark greens of the curtains!

On top I added a sassy green and white gingham lampshade that adds such a fun pop of pattern to the room. I’m obsessed!

Moving to the master bedroom sitting area…

Another fabulous find that sort of fell in my lap is this gorgeous early 19th century Federal style secretary from New England. I put a max bid on it at auction never thinking I would win and then what a surprise when the auction house sent me an invoice. LOL…I was giddy with surprise and excitement.

There are a million little drawers and pockets to store all my jewelry and accessories. The piece has worked out perfectly for our master bedroom. I will write up a post about this piece and how I organized everything soon.

The camel back sofa is another estate sale find. The ivory damask adds a nice contrast to all the color happening in the room as well as the dark wood furniture. I love the air of tradition it gives the space while still being a comfortable spot to lounge and read.

I have my great aunt’s crochet blanket draped across one end, which amps up the cozy factor. Some of my favorite design books are stacked near by for a quiet moment of inspiration.

An inexpensive (under $150) slipper chair in the prettiest green and white leafy pattern perches across the way. I positioned it against my vintage wicker screen and set a MCM Italian gilt lily table next to it for a playful garden vibe. It’s a great spot to slip on shoes or just pause for a moment and catch my breath while chasing our toddler around.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you’ve enjoyed this tour of our blue and green master bedroom! Stay tuned for a video tour.
