That delightfully crisp autumn air has rolled in. The leaves are glowing. And cozy evenings at home with good friends are on the horizon. Let's host an old fashioned fondue party with decadent cheese, warm bread, yummy fixings, and maybe a glass or two of vino!

Welcome to my vintage inspired fall fondue party!

The Setting

I covered the table with a plaid topper from April Cornell. This farmhouse plaid with its mix of blue, red, and gold literally goes with everything and works well from autumn through the holidays. I love the vintage feel of the plaid.

At each place setting I used a Mottahedeh Creil architectural bowl for the soup course then a red dinner plate and on the bottom a copper charger. Bamboo flatware and vintage wooden napkin rings add a casual vibe, while Murano goblets in black and white bring the chic vintage touch. The place setting is finished with these gorgeous antique Salviati Moser enameled bowls!

For the centerpiece, I let the classic Swissmar fondue pot shine center stage and tumbled pumpkins, gourds, and apples down either side with a few sprigs of faux bittersweet berries mixed in for texture.

The Fondue Party Menu

Greet guests with a signature fall cocktail like this bubbly apple or this hot toddy.

Skip the appetizers and go straight for a soup course. We served this button mushroom soup.

Then time for all the cheesy goodness!

Dipping bread in fondue cheese with a Swissmar pot

I used this recipe for a classic fondue, and it was delicious -- perfectly melty and savory!

To dip in the fondue we baked a loaf of our sesame bread from Wild Grain  ($40 off your first box when you use my link) and served lightly steamed cauliflower and bell pepper, cooked bratwursts, cooked sweet potato, and chopped fresh apple. The bread, apple, cauliflower, and brats were the most liked by our guests.

To pair with the cheese and give a bit of a palette cleanser I recommend this citrus salad with honey dressing.

Tips for Hosting Your Own Fall Fondue Party:

  • Make your dinner party an intimate affair for 4-6 guests, depending on how many fondue pots you want to use and make sure seating is within easy distance of the pot.

  • Keep the centerpiece simple and low so guests can easily reach the fondue pot. Let it be the star of the centerpiece.

  • Use a table cloth and decor near the fondue pot that is easy to clean and you don't mind getting cheesy. There will be dripped cheese. Hence my pumpkin pile. They were easily wiped off.

  • Since you are doing a low centerpiece, consider decorating your chandelier. I used a bittersweet garland and bows to add some drama.

  • For the dipping foods make sure they are sturdy enough to stay on the fork. The sweet potato tasted good with the cheese, but it kept falling off into the pot and was too difficult to handle.

  • The cheese fondue is very filling and heavy, so pair other light foods with it for a brightening palette cleanser.

Happy Hosting!
