Jolly Blossoms Christmas Tree
A look at my Jolly Blossoms Christmas tree decorated with grapevine, magnolia, ranunculus, amaryllis, sugar pinecones, lanterns, bells, and lots of ribbon + I'm sharing my floral Christmas tree DIY tips and tricks.

If you are stopping in from my Jolly Blossoms mantel, you'll know that I took this mission from House Beautiful very seriously:
Whatever your taste may be, one thing is certain:
Christmas is the time, in the matter of decoration, to let the fancy roam,
to be inventive, creative, gay, light-hearted and unafraid.
~House Beautiful 1962
For the Christmas tree this meant embracing a garden theme with a bounty of blooms spilling across the branches. Grapevine wraps the tree in twisting twigs. Red, pink, and white gingham ribbon poufs amongst the pine. Gold holly sparkles. Flickering lanterns dance. And festive bells swoop down the side.
This tree has a lot going on, and I LOVE it!

Using Grapevine on a Floral Christmas Tree
The first layer of the tree is grapevine. I used wreaths broken down into twisting coils. It took two 18" diameter wreaths and one 12" to wrap this 7.5' 55"D tree. Starting at the top, I let the vine coil around and down the tree, working with the curling shape. I really wanted to bring some rustic texture to the Christmas tree and echo the branches and vines you would find in a winter garden. Here's a few tips on adding grapevine to your tree:
- Shop your local thrift stores to pick up grapevine wreaths. I bought three for $15.
- Break down the wreaths outside because it is going to be messy. Wear gloves.
- After you get three to five feet uncoiled cut it off from the rest of the vine. It is easier to manipulate around your tree in sections.
- You have to work with the coil of the grapevine, but you can manipulate it a bit by securing sections with floral wire to the branches of your evergreen tree.
Here is a process view of the tree as I wrapped grapevine around it:
Adding Floral Bouquets to the Tree
The other floral Christmas tree DIY I created for my Jolly Blossoms tree are these bouquets of flowers. The image above shows the side view. To create these I simply created a bouquet of magnolia leaves, one magnolia bloom red or white, ranunculus, and amaryllis in my hand then wrapped floral tape around the stems to hold them in place.
This is a really easy way to get custom Christmas tree picks for your decorations. Check out this tutorial for more.

Ribbons & Bows
There might be close to 30 yards of ribbon on this tree! Yep, I know that's a lot! I used the pink, red, and white gingham as a streamer running along with the grapevine and wrapping around the tree. Then I tied three loop bows with long tails using the fuchsia pink velvet ribbon and the gold sequin ribbon, placing those here and there on the tree. Finally, I used just a touch of this pretty green velvet bee ribbon on the white lanterns.

Floral Christmas Tree Ornaments
To ornament my Jolly Blossoms tree, I used two larger features: flickering white lanterns and white bells. The lanterns are spaced routinely around the tree, and the three bells swoop down the tree in a curve following the grapevine. Adding large elements to the Christmas tree brings a lot of sculptural interest and feels very whimsical. Be sure to attach them early on in the process, so you don't knock fragile ornaments off.
Finishing off the decor are my collections of vintage glass baubles and Danbury Mint gold ornaments. I'm obsessed with these delicate gold ornaments, and try to add to my collection every year.
