5 tips to style your hutch with china and antiques

I found this corner hutch a few years ago now, and it is one of my favorite pieces to display my collection of china and antiques! I try to change it seasonally, but you can almost always find a few pieces of Rose Medallion perched on the shelves.

Hutches can be a bit tricky to style because the shelves are often narrow or triangular if it’s a corner piece. But these work horses can be wonderful for showcasing your treasured collections and useful storage. If you are feeling a bit stuck styling your hutch, here’s 5 tips to help you get creative!

No. 1 Stand Up Your Plates

Duh! I know this one is pretty obvious, but it is the best starting point as you style the shelves front to back. If your hutch has plate grooves you’re all set, but if not try a simple stand like this or this easel. My corner hutch doesn’t have the grooves and stands sometimes take up too much room, so often I ball up a bit of tacky putty and push it on the rim of the plate to stand it up and keep it secure.

No. 2 Vary Height & Shape

Use vases or goblets to vary the height and shape of your hutch arrangement. You need to break up all the rounded forms of the plates and adding in your beautiful glass pieces is the perfect solution.

No. 3 Create Stacks

If like me your ceramics collection is busting out of the doors of your cabinetry, you need your hutch to store not just display those beautiful dishes. So make stacks of your bowls, smaller plates, tea cups, etc. I love the look of a stacked set of tea cups with the cup in its saucer. Thanks Martha for that tip!

No. 4 Add Something Unexpected

Fresh flowers, books, recipe boxes, and figurines can also add a lot of interest when styling your hutch, so don’t ignore those special pieces.

No. 5 Coordinate Colors

When mixing different patterns and materials work with in a color palette to create harmony. In both styled versions of my corner hutch, I’ve used a predominately pink and green color scheme with lots of white and hints of blue.

If you really want to jazz up your hutch with a new look, paint the back a different color or line it in fabric or wallpaper. This will really draw the eye in to your collections and make everything pop.

Happy styling friends!
