Engravings housed in reddish pink mats and gilt frames.
An architect and illustrator, Thomas Allom (1804-1872) visited China sometime after 1820 – perhaps in his travels during the 1830’s to Istanbul. He captured city views and scenes of daily life from a Westerner’s perspective to meet the growing curiosity about the East. Allom published an impressive set of steel engravings based on his drawings in 1843-47 titled “China Illustrated.”
First edition was issued in 1842 by Fisher & Son followed by an edition in 1845 by Peter Jackson and a later edition in 1859 by The London Printing & Publishing Co. Learn more here: https://www.chinese-outpost.com/history/thomas-allom-china-illustrated/
