Cinnamon Ginger Applesauce Recipe
Elevate your applesauce recipe with cinnamon, ginger, and honey for a healthy autumn snack that’s not just for the kids!
Every autumn my mother makes the most delicious applesauce recipe and cans it for us to enjoy year round. She uses a very simple recipe and no sugar. Her secret is a variety of apples. The applesauce is sweet and tangy and delicious all on its own.
But lately, I’ve been looking to add more ginger to my diet and brainstormed that a generous sprinkling of ginger in her applesauce would be yummy. Guess what? It’s better than yummy; it is perfecto!??
Ginger has important health benefits from antioxidant properties to anti-inflammatory effects. Ginger can combat muscle pain and fatigue as well as nausea. I love the zesty punch of it, and it pairs so beautifully with apples.
To really kick in all those autumn flavors I also add a couple of dashes of cinnamon and a dollop of honey.
This cinnamon ginger applesauce recipe is good enough to be a dessert!
Mother’s Homemade Applesauce Recipe
Makes 2-3 pints
Ingredients
12 Apples – variety of gala, pink lady, red and yellow delicious, and granny smith. My mom often buys what are called deer apples from the fruit stand. These are culled when grading because of a bruise or two, but they make great applesauce.
3 1/2 cups Water
1 tsp Salt
To make
Fill a large pot with 2 cups of water and tsp of salt. Wash and peel your apples. Cut the apple in quarters and remove core then slice in long pieces like for a pie. Place slices in salted water to keep apples from darkening. You may want to work one apple at a time from peeling to slicing, so that they don’t turn. Apples should be completely submerged in water.
Once all your apples are ready drain away the salted water. If you are watching your salt intake you can rinse the apples too.
Pour 1 1/2 cups of water back over apples and cook on medium – medium high until tender about 20 minutes. Your apples will cook down and be just a bit chunky. If you want totally smooth applesauce, blend with immersion blender.
You can store in refrigerator for several days or can it by water bath. Learn how here.
Cinnamon Ginger Applesauce Recipe
Makes one serving
Ingredients
1 cup Applesauce – I use my mother’s homemade most of the time, but I’ve tried and liked Simple Truth Organic unsweetened applesauce.
1/2 tsp Grated Ginger – I buy it fresh and peel off the skin then freeze the chunks, so they are ready to zest.
1 tsp Honey
2 dashes Cinnamon
To make
Pour the applesauce in a microwavable bowl or jar. Grate the fresh ginger over top using a zester. Give it a stir. Add the honey. Stir. Add the cinnamon and stir. Microwave for 45 seconds to a minute until warmed through.
If you are making a big batch of homemade applesauce you could just add these autumn flavors to the sauce as you make it just double the cinnamon, ginger, and honey for every pint.
Slice up a fresh apple, add some grapes and a few bits of cheese (I like gouda or cheddar with apples) for a yummy autumn snack!
This sounds amazing! Definitely saving!!
